Never Trust Too Easily

During the first week of April, I received a phone call from a customer service representative of AIG. He introduced a promo connected with SM Advantage. According to him, once I availed the insurance policy, I would receive 50 reward points and only pay Php15 per day.

At first, it sounded simple and affordable.

There was no personal interaction at all — just a phone call. But throughout the conversation, he kept repeating that everything was being recorded.

Honestly, he was really good at promoting the insurance.

The moment you say “YES,” you’re automatically insured.

He asked for my credit card details for the mode of payment, and without thinking too much, I gave them.

After the call ended, I immediately contacted BDO and SM Advantage to confirm if the promo was legitimate.

BDO had no idea about it.
SM Advantage, however, confirmed that it was valid.

By the second week, there was already a deduction on my credit card.

But as the days passed, I still hadn’t received any insurance policy.

No documents.
No policy details.
Nothing.

So I called the company to cancel it.

Instead of processing the cancellation immediately, they kept telling me to wait for the policy first so I could “fully understand” the coverage.

By the last week of April, I called again to request cancellation and reversal of payment.

The agent told me that she could cancel the policy, but they could no longer reverse the deduction already charged to my card.

She also offered to email me a scanned copy of the policy “within the week.”

And then she casually mentioned that the billing starts every 6th of the month.

That’s when I got really annoyed.

It had already been ONE MONTH and I still hadn’t received the actual policy.

So what if they sent it late?

That would mean another deduction would already happen before I even fully understood what I signed up for.

And what made me question everything even more was this:

If I stopped paying later on — or once I reached the age of 72, which was supposedly the last payment — I wouldn’t even be able to use it anymore.

So what was the point?

It felt useless.

They kept saying:

“You will be insured.”

But what kind of insurance is that if, after years of paying, you no longer get to benefit from it the way you expected?

That experience taught me three things:

Never trust too easily.
Never invest in something you don’t fully understand.
And most importantly — learn how to say NO.

  1. sis, I received a call from them a couple of hours ago. I told the csr to give me a moment to think of it, my reason for not saying yes before i hang up the phone was, most of the insurance or any educational companies are not stable, i dont know, i just dont trust them at all, maybe because my mother was a member of a educational plan before for my studies and to her surprised, the company was already been closed. anyway, the offer was convincing, until i saw your blog, so right now, im thinking twice whether to avail it or not. thanks for sharing!

    1. Thanks for reading. Good thing you didn't convince by their promos. But it's up to you if you think that this policy was okay. In my point of view, it was not advisable for a healthy person. It's like you will keep keep on paying until the age limit but you'll never return your investment. You can only use it when you're still in terms & get involved in accident, sickness & death.

  2. i also got a call from them, nag i insist talaga sila.. magaling sila mag convince pero d padin ako pumayag. nagduda ako ng pinipilit nila ako na ibigay credit card ko.

  6. What if you didnt give them your credit card number? Would they still be able to deduct the payment?

    ReplyDelete
  7. No. But if you tell them that you don't have cc they will ask for your atm/savings acct. They don't usually accept otc payment or deposit thru bank, just auto-debit either cc or savings.

  9. after reading your blog i called AIG immediately and canceled it. although I'm not really sure about the cancellation process as I have to contact AIG again on Friday to know if they canceled it na. I do hope they won't charge Ms. Riane may I ask if they canceled yours na and we're you charged sa credit card?

  10. In my experience, my card was deducted on April upon confirmation. On the first week of May, I decided to cancel it because there still no delivered policy (hardcopy) & they said that auto debit was done every 6th of the month. They requested a cancellation letter & I sent it on the 2nd of May. No additional charge after that incident.

    4. @jenny, first call AIG for the cancellation of your policy, pero expect na maraming sasabihin ung agent para pigilan ka basta stick on your decision. May ibibigay po syang email add tas dun mo isesend ung letter, the content was based on your situation & the reasons why you need to cancel it. 2x po tlaga ung bawas kase ung total nun is equal to the amount na pinagkasunduan ninyo nung agent. Dapat masend mo agad un para ndi makaltas sa nxt billing kase may sinusunod din silang araw so better ask them kung kailan ang auto debit nila sa cc mo.

I immediately went to the net to check on reviews. Thank you guys. I will surely say NO now. :)

  24. It was a mistake that I said YES to their offer, after reading your post I will call them tomorrow since their office hours is just 8am - 5pm, I tried calling my credit card company but sad to say that they cannot block any transaction coming from AIG, instead I could request a replacement card and I will be issued with a new CC#, but the customer care advised me to contact first AIG and request a cancellation.

If AIG will not cancel my application then I will be forced to apply for a credit card replacement.

Thanks again guys, this was very informative.

Was skeptic on some questions she asked like asking me to state my tin # then later my credit card, before disaster starts I asked where their office is which is in Makati and asked her to callback tomorrow then immediately checked the insurance company and saw your blog. After reading this, I remember how noisy they were on the background, clapping and congratulating co-agent. oh people now a days! they would do anything just to earn money. Again, thanks for this and let's not be a victim of such people.

    1. I called the company thrice to confirm if my request for cancellation of those policies I got.

April 2 - I sent an e-mail to wecare.phl@aig.com to request for cancellation of policies.
April 3 - I called via toll-free to confirm if they received my e-mail but they said that they didn't receive any. So the agent named, Regina, told me to write a letter for cancellation with my affixed signature. What I did was I typed my cancellation letter in MS WORD and attached on my e-mail.Since our phone conversation was recorded, she asked me about my policy number but I didn't get any (I probably lost it). Then, she gave me the case number for to send via e-mail.
April 4 - I called again to confirm if they received my formal cancellation letter thru e-mail and they said NO! The agent gave the e-mail addresses to send my formal letter of cancellation.
April 7 - I called again to the company if my request was already cancelled. The agent said YES last April 3. I was hoping that they wouldn't get my money on my bank account within this week. I might check sometime this Friday. The bad news was THEY DON'T REFUND THE INITIAL PAYMENTS!!! WHAT'S THE POINT? IT'S MY MONEY. >.<

I just wish that they stop getting my money on my bank account. What I really hate is that they charge with a huge amount of money (they get P 695.00/ month). Hayyyzzzz. Maybe, it's a good decision to SAY NO to SCAMMERS. They're just like mosquitoes who suck your blood. TSK TSK TSK

  29. im glad i found your post!! Someone called me yesterday telling me that i was selected for the policy. the person introduced herself, informing me that she's from the AIG. like what the rest of you experienced, the person kept on convincing me that the policy is very useful. then later on, she began asking some of my personal details (well if they’re legit, how come they dont know my mailing address?). then i asked the agent if i am being ENROLLED. and to my surprise, the agent said YES. ( how can i be so sure about it, if i am being enrolled via phone conversation ONLY??) so i told the agent that i need time to think over... maybe call me tom lunch for my decision.
the good thing about it was that i wasnt able to give them my CC#.
imagine paying php27/day then you are a legit member!!
after that, i called my cousin who happens to be working in BDO asking her if she have an idea about AIG and if is it connected to them. and guess what, she just said "i have no idea about it, havent heard" .
today, im expecting a call from AIG. Having found your post is a very big help :)

  44. Hi, everyone. Licensed insurance agent here (not from AIG). What you have all availed is a term insurance, it means that the company will give you an insurance policy for a relatively small premium. HOWEVER, the insurance company will only cover you:

1.) as long as you are paying them religiously (that's why they're after your credit cards) and
    2.) until a certain age (i.e. 72 y/o).

It is not a scam, the delayed policy probably rooted from the fact that they hard-sold majority of SM Advantage card holders that they can barely keep up with the production.

Personally, I don't recommend this to my clients since it requires them to pay for their insurance non-stop. Insurance should be viewed as an investment, one where you can direct a part of your savings, expecting it to yield higher returns in the future. There are a lot of insurance companies who offer VUL products that can give you your money's worth (e.g. BPI-PhilAm, SunLife, Insular Life, ManuLife).

If anyone is interested to learn more, you can e-mail me at nicole.ang23@yahoo.com and I'll try to answer your concerns there. I'm not a blogger, I just happen to stumble to this thread due to a similar concern with my brother.

  47. Guys, naka-receive din ako ng tawag from them kanina lang. If you really want to stop them from deducting charges from your account, I suggest na ipa-block nyu nalang sa BDO Customer Service ang account nyu. Credit Card man yan o Debit Card. Hindi scam ang AIG and its true na naka-tie up sila sa BDO. But still nasa sa inyo kung YES/NO ang isasagot nyu sa kanila. In my case, it was also my mistake for saying YES dahil masyadong malaki para sakin ang 612 a month! At dahil naibigay ko din ang credit card number ko, i've immediately called BDO to block my credit card. For me, mas mabuti na yung ma-block ang credit card ko kesa mabawasan credit limit ko every month! Tutal my replacement naman yun within 10 banking days.
